Seasons Greetings from ArtBridges/ToileDesArts!

22 12 2011

Seasons Greetings from ArtBridges / ToileDesArts!

To all our friends and community partners, we wish you a creative, joyful, community-engaged, artistic, restful, inspired, snowy, cozy, warm and wonderful time over the holidays!

And… if anyone is so inspired to doodle over the holidays… pick up a pencil, haul out your sketch pad and ignite your imagination… there are three Canada-wide contests / calls for submissions in community arts that we are aware of. Please pass this on to your friends, co-workers and/or fellow community arts program participants. You don’t have to be a graphic designer and perfection is not required. All are looking for imaginative and creative concepts from young and older Canadians. Here’s the info:

1) “Help us create a new logo for ArtBridges / ToileDesArts. We are calling creative stripes of all ages, from 3 to 130, to help us design a new logo that best represents the term “ArtBridging”. It doesn’t necessarily have to include an image of a bridge (though we do like our bridges).” Submissions due January 30th, prize available. See more here.

2) “ The Michaëlle Jean Foundation (FMJF) and EQ3 invite creative young people, 15 – 30 years old, to Imagine… a Better Community and submit original artwork depicting what they envisage to Generation Art.” Submissions due January 10th, prize available. See more here and watch this to learn more.

3) “ The Centre for Environmental Health Equity (CEHE) and the Sustainable Thinking and Expression for Public Spaces (STEPS) Initiative are seeking creative expressions on children’s environmental health issues for inclusion in the Knowledge Leaders in Children’s Environmental Health National Training Program.” Due January 30th, all ages. See more here.

All the best for a happy and healthy new year!

Seanna Connell
Project Director, on behalf of the ArtBridges / ToileDesArts team

ArtBridges/ToileDesArts vous souhaite de joyeuses fêtes!

22 12 2011

Profile: North York Community House Digital Storytelling Program
Status: Not-for-Profit organization & Program
Community served: North York Community House predominantly serves newcomers, but works with all residents in North York. Digital Storytelling serves any communities, locally, provincially, nationally
Arts focus: Digital Storytelling & media arts
Language(s): English, facilitators speak a variety of languages including Japanese, Tagalog, Urdu, Vietnamese, Farsi, Spanish
Location: 638 Sheppard Ave West (at Bathurst) Suite 220. Our mobile media lab allows us to offer workshops offsite at any location
Mandate: North York Community House is a non-profit organization that works to empower people to create and share their own digital stories as a strategy for personal and community transformation.  We work with communities to use digital storytelling as a tool for engagement and mobilization efforts, for educating and raising awareness about urgent social issues, to work for policy change, assess community needs, conduct research and evaluate programs.
Main arts activities/projects: NYCH offers digital storytelling opportunities to community organizations, schools, health care centres, and other groups through Customized Digital Storytelling Workshops.  We collaborate to make a program that meets the needs of your community.  Our mobile media lab enables us to work with you in your own community.  NYCH offers digital storytelling opportunities to the general public three to four times a year.  Our next workshop is January 27-29th, 2012.

In a digital story workshop, participants start with no media equipment in the room- instead we have a story circle where each person has a chance to share their story, receive feedback, and listen to each other.  Then, each person learns to craft and record their own first-person story, collect still images, video, and sound, and is guided through computer tutorials that enable them, with teacher support, to edit their own story. Our workshops offer a safe, supportive environment in which participants with little to no prior video-making experience can make their own 2-5 minute video.  Based on the model developed by the Center for Digital Storytelling in Berkley, California, North York Community House is part of an international movement of people using digital storytelling to empower individuals and communities who are working towards a more just and equitable worlds.
NEXT WORKSHOP: January 27-29, 2012 (Fri-Sun). 9am-5pm. Cost: $500
Workshop Location: North York Community House. 638 Sheppard Ave. W., Suite 220, North York, Ontario M3H 2S1

Sommaire: les arts communautaires francophones au Nunavut / Summary: Francophone community arts in Nunavut

Sommaire: les arts communautaires francophones au Nunavut

Decembre 2011

Alexa

Summary: Francophone community arts in Nunavut

December, 2011

While the territory is extremely vast, Nunavut holds one of the smallest populations in Canada. However, the small population size does not hold back the cultural activities! Whether it is inuit art, sculpture making, dance, drumming, or one of many other forms, art is weaved into the lifestyle of the residents of Nunavut.

About 1.3% of Nunavut residents are Francophone (2006 census). In my research for Francophone community arts in Nunavut, I’ve found several English or Inuktitut artist co-operatives, art centres, but not many for Francophones, given their small community in Nunavut. L’Association des francophones du Nunavut offers many cultural activities, such as community dinners, theatre and improv, and film screenings, among others. ArtCirq, a collective of circus art performers working in Montreal and Igloolik, offers educational and participatory workshops. Their creativity is amazing! Stay tuned for their upcoming profile on our blog.

Do you know of any Francophone community art organizations, programs or projects going on in Nunavut? Send me an e-mail!

See you later,

Alexa
