Community Served/Arts Focus/Mandate:
“Making Room Community Arts is a multi-disciplinary arts organization, housed at the Parkdale Activity Recreation Centre (PARC) a place where people facing substantial challenges such as homelessness, poverty and as consumer survivors can rebuild their lives. PARC is located at Queen and Sorauren, in the Parkdale region of Toronto.
Making Room brings together people, places, and things that have previously been kept apart: noise and silence, action and contemplation, rest and movement, artists and non-artists, the housed and the under-housed – all through a process of collaborative art-making.

Main arts activities:
Last year we created Hunger and Wholeness a community arts photo project that included “Portraits of Silence” a series of large scale photographs of PARC members and others in postures of meditation and “Sparks that Fly” a series of light boxes that reveal the range of emotions expressed when the theme of health and hunger are explored.
Our main project this year is to bring PARC members, artists and Parkdale residents together to build a handmade raft that we will take to the lake as part of a giant parade, defying the separating highway and return to the lake as a rightful part of Parkdale.”
